Paramasivam

Simple Wonders

Help the environment, discover Indian creativity, make ingenious folk toys.

Join Paramasivam as he guides participants over eight years old to create flapping birds, prancing elephants, drums, and more out of cereal boxes, tuna cans, and other recyclables.

Workshops last from one to two hours and can accomodate up to 30 participants (large groups of children may need some adult help). These exciting hands-on workshops are great for libraries, classrooms, museums, community centers. Paramasivam also gives staff and parent workshops, sharing a range of ideas in motion. His workshops have been enthusiastically received in Western Washington and Singapore.

Paramasivam can also bring copies of his book Simple Wonders, published by Tulika Books in South India. The book gives clear illustrations and careful directions for making a number of these clever toys. Indian folk tales and riddles accompany the toys.

"Sivam's patience and preparation were terrific - he had supplies for a delightful variety and number of toys...He went step-by-step, assisted everyone, and encouraged patience. Everyone went home happy with at least six toys. We really put those cereal boxes, tuna cans, and rubber bands to good use."
Kathy Teufel, Greenwood Library, Seattle

"I loved the way he was with the kids - very steady. The demonstration was just right: they watched and understood. His anecdotes about India intrigued us and the products were wonderful examples of imagination."
Libby Sinclair, University Heights School, Seattle

"Thank you for a wonderful program...The children were very enthusiastic and really proud of their completed projects. Parents raved about the program and were especially pleased that their children had seen what fun they could have making toys instead of just buying them."
Anita Sheneberger, Auburn Library, Washington
